The INRIA Planète research team has an open PhD position and is
looking for a motivated candidate.

The work will be carried out in the context of the *joint laboratory
between INRIA / Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs*, in close collaboration
with the Bell Labs team. However, the PhD student will be located in
the INRIA premises, at Grenoble, France.

This thesis aims at optimizing and improving the quality of experience
of audio and video services transmitted over a wireless network, by
optimizing the FEC (Forward Error/Erasure Correction) codes used to
recover from transmission errors. The study will consider the whole
transmission and application platform, with a cross-layer approach.
If a general wireless transmission system will be considered in a
first step, using mathematical models, the study will also consider
the emerging DVB-H/SH multimedia broadcasting networks in a second
step. This work can potentially include both theoretical and very
practical contributions.

Knowledge and experience in the following areas is welcome:
- IP network and protocols, in particular multimedia transmission
protocols (e.g., RTP/UDP),
- Source coding (e.g., video coding),
- Channel coding (e.g., Forward Error Correction techniques,
especially for the erasure channel),
- Joint Source / Channel coding,
- Wireless multimedia transmission systems (e.g., DVB family of

The student will be employed by INRIA, with a 36 month contract
and a gross salary around 2,000 Euros/month.
The thesis is envisioned to start during the Autumn 2008.

Interested candidates are asked to contact *both*:

- Bessem Sayadi (
- Yann Leprovost (
A detailed description of the thesis subject will then be provided.
